Dear Taekwondo Leaders:

There seems to be some confusion as to the Kukkiwon events we will be hosting in Denver, Colorado. Please allow me to clarify:

  1. Traditionally, the Kukkiwon has held the 8th and 9th Dan Promotion Test at the Kukkiwon in Korea. This event is the same Promotion Test for 8th and 9th Dan, except it is being held in Denver, Colorado.
  2. The Kukkiwon is also holding 1st through 7th Dan Promotion Testing.
  3. The Kukkiwon is also holding a Master Instructor License Seminar.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you in June!

Sincerely,

Master Sammy Pejo
Secretary General of the Organizing Committee
Kukkiwon Promotion Test and License Course

KUKKIWON 8th and 9th DAN HIGH TEST AND 1st-7th DAN LOW TEST DEADLINE ANNOUNCEMENT

The historic Kukkiwon 8th and 9th Dan High Test, 1st-7th Dan Low Test, and Master Instructor License Course has a limit of 300 participants. On May 5, 2017, the Organizing Committee will be traveling to Korea to meet with the Kukkiwon in person to make final determinations for applicants with special situations regarding their Dan promotion. Once a final determination has been made for each pending applicant, the Organizing Committee will contact the applicants with the final result so each applicant can make the appropriate travel arrangements to Denver, CO.

The deadline to apply for the 8th and 9th Dan High Test, 1st-7th Dan Low Test is WEDNESDAY MAY 3, 2017 at 11:59pm Mountain Time.  All applications received after this deadline will be put on a waiting list. In the event the number of applicants drops below 300 due to ineligible test candidates, the Organizing Committee will submit the waiting list applicants to the Kukkiwon for a final determination.

The Master Instructor License Course registration will remain open until the maximum of 300 combined applicants has been reached. Once the 300 applicants have been reached, all applicants for the Master Instructor License Course will be placed on the Master Instructor License Course waiting list, and notified if any openings become available due to withdrawals.

What is “Kukkiwon America”? Is this an official branch of the Kukkiwon?

Kukkiwon America is NOT an official branch of the Kukkiwon and Kukkiwon America does not officially exist.  The group “World Taekwondo Masters Union (WTMU)” is using the name “Kukkiwon America” without the authorization of Kukkiwon to mislead people.  No organization or group can use the name “Kukkiwon America” without direct approval from the Kukkiwon.  They have been notified by the Kukkiwon to cease using the name “Kukkiwon America.”

The WTMU is an independent organization that has held events with the Kukkiwon under a “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).”  This MOU is no longer valid.  In 2016 while the MOU was still valid, the Kukkiwon approved a Master License Course to be held in California in June 2017.

Generally, the cost of the Kukkiwon Master License is $200.  The Master License Course scheduled to be held in June 2017 in California is $350 per person.  This group is charging the additional $150 to cover costs for their Organizing Committee and will send the remaining $200 to the Kukkiwon.

The Master License Course being organized by the U.S. Taekwondo Committee in Denver, CO is only $200 per person. The entire amount of $200 will be sent back to the Kukkiwon.

In addition, the Organizing Committee will pay for the hotel rooms on Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17, 2017 for all participants.  Participants of the Master License Course being held in California will be responsible for the cost of their own hotel rooms.
