1. What is a “Skip Dan” Promotion Test?
A “Skip Dan” Promotion test is where a Taekwondo practitioner can test for multiple levels at one time. There are a variety of circumstances that result in a “Skip Dan” Promotion Test situation. Some examples are as follows:
EXAMPLES OF ACCEPTABLE SKIP DAN SITUATIONS:
- Sparring athlete that has been training regularly for years but has not been taking Kukkiwon belt promotion tests.
- Taekwondo practitioner who has been consistently training and testing for Black Belt Certification but was unaware that his or her Master instructor was not receiving official Kukkiwon Certification.
- Taekwondo Master or School owner who has been teaching and training regularly for a number of years but did not have the chance to take his or her next Promotion Test.
EXAMPLES OF INELIGIBLE SKIP DAN SITUATIONS:
- Taekwondo practitioner who wants to skip belts levels in a short period of time simply to accelerate belt rank.
- Taekwondo practitioner that is not a 1st Degree Black Belt in any Taekwondo system.
All applicants for Skip Dan Promotion Testing MUST have the minimum number of years of training to be eligible for Skip Dan. The minimums are below:

2. How do I know if I am eligible for a Skip Dan Promotion Test?
The Kukkiwon and Organizing Committee understand that each situation is unique. If you have specific questions regarding your eligibility please email Master Sammy Pejo at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Organizing Committee encourages everyone to apply. The Organizing Committee will communicate directly with the Kukkiwon to determine if the applicant is eligible.
3. What is the most number of Dan levels I can skip?
Applicants can apply for up to 3 levels to skip. Applications can apply to skip 1, 2, or 3 levels.
The maximum number of levels to skip is 3.
Examples are shown below:
1st Dan can skip to 4th Dan
2nd Dan can skip to 5th Dan
3rd Dan can skip to 6th Dan
4th Dan can skip to 7th Dan
5th Dan can skip to 8th Dan.
All individual’s applications will be reviewed by the Kukkiwon and Organizing Committee. All applications for a Skip Dan Promotion test will be approved or denied by Kukkiwon and Organizing Committee.
4. How do I apply for a Skip Dan Promotion Test and when will I be notified if my application for Skip Dan has been approved?
Everyone is encouraged to apply for Skip Dan Testing as soon as possible. CLICK HERE to apply. Once the application is submitted and paid, the Kukkiwon and Organizing Committee will review the application and notify acceptance or denial within 14 business days.
If the application is denied the test fee will be refunded back.
5. How much does it cost to Skip Dan Test?
The fees for promotion testing are below:

If the application is applying for SKIP DAN, the applicant will be responsible for paying EVERY DAN level that he or she is testing for.
Current 1st Dan is applying to Skip Dan test to 4th Dan. The applicant must pay $360.00 (2nd Dan $90 + 3rd Dan $120 + 4th Dan $150 = $360.00)
6. What is the Senior 8th and 9th Dan Promotion Test.
The Kukkiwon is the World Headquarters for Taekwondo and has been issuing Black Belt Certification and training for 45 years. 8th and 9th Dan Promotion testing has ONLY been held in Korea at the Kukkiwon. This is the first time in the history of Taekwondo that an 8th and 9th Dan Test will be held outside of Kukkiwon.
7. Can I skip from 7th Dan to 9thDan?
Historically skipping from 7th to 9th Dan has not been authorized by the Kukkiwon. Due to this historic Special Promotion Test applicants can apply to skip from 7th to 9th Dan and the Kukkiwon and Organizing Committee will review the application for approval. Once the application is submitted and paid, the Kukkiwon and Organizing Committee will review the application and notify acceptance or denial within 7-10 business days.
8. There are numerous Organizations (Kwans) that certify Black Belts (Ji Do Kwan, Chung Do Kwan, Moo Do Kwan, etc.) Can I transfer my Kwan Dan over to Kukkiwon?
The Kukkiwon and Organizing Committee are working hard to allow for the transfer of Kwan Black Belt Certification to official Kukkiwon Certification. Currently, the Kukkiwon will accept a transfer from a different Kwan certificate up to a maximum of 3rd Dan Kukkiwon.

Current 6th Dan Jidokwan Black Belt. The 6th Dan Jidokwan Certificate will be recognized as a 3rd Dan Kukkiwon Black Belt.
This individual should apply as a current 3rd Dan Kukkiwon Black Belt and apply for a Skip Dan test for 6th Dan Kukkiwon.
The Organizing Committee is working directly with the Kukkiwon to allow for higher Kwan conversion to Kukkiwon. Please continue to check this website for updates.
9. Some Taekwondo Schools do not use Kukkiwon or Kwan Black Belt Certification and only their own Taekwondo School Certificate. Will these Black Belt Certificates be transferred to Kukkiwon Certification?
Current Kukkiwon Guidelines do not recognize these types of Black Belt Certificates. However, the Organizing Committee is working closely with the Kukkiwon to allow the transfer of these certificates to enable Taekwondo practitioners to apply for this test. 10. Is this ONLY a Skip Dan test or can I simply test for 1 level up?
This is a Regular Test, Skip Dan Test, and Senior Promotion Test. Therefore, applicants can simply test for 1 rank up
EXAMPLE: Current 4th Dan can test for 5th Dan.
11. Can I take the Skip Dan Promotion Test and not the Master Instructor License Course?
No. All participants of the Promotion test MUST ALSO participate in the Kukkiwon Master License Course.
12. Can I take the Master Instructor License Course without taking the High Dan or Skip Dan Test?

13. Will the Organizing Committee pay for my hotel room for the High Dan or Skip Dan test?
No. All expenses (hotel, meals, transportation, etc.) are the responsibility of the participant for Wednesday, June 14th and Thursday, June 15th.
The Organizing Committee WILL pay for your hotel room on Friday June 16th and Saturday June 17th (with a roommate). Each participant will be invited to a formal dinner on Friday June 16th and Saturday June 17th. All other meals on these 2 days will be the responsibility of each participant.
14. What is “Kukkiwon America”? Is this an official branch of the Kukkiwon?
Kukkiwon America is NOT an official branch of the Kukkiwon and Kukkiwon America does not officially exist. The group “World Taekwondo Masters Union (WTMU)” is using the name “Kukkiwon America” without the authorization of Kukkiwon to mislead people. No organization or group can use the name “Kukkiwon America” without direct approval from the Kukkiwon. They have been notified by the Kukkiwon to cease using the name “Kukkiwon America.”
The WTMU is an independent organization that has held events with the Kukkiwon under a “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).” This MOU is no longer valid. In 2016 while the MOU was still valid, the Kukkiwon approved a Master License Course to be held in California in June 2017.
Generally, the cost of the Kukkiwon Master License is $200. The Master License Course scheduled to be held in June 2017 in California is $350 per person. This group is charging the additional $150 to cover costs for their Organizing Committee and will send the remaining $200 to the Kukkiwon.
The Master License Course being organized by the U.S. Taekwondo Committee in Denver, CO is only $200 per person. The entire amount of $200 will be sent back to the Kukkiwon.
In addition, the Organizing Committee will pay for the hotel rooms on Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17, 2017 for all participants. Participants of the Master License Course being held in California will be responsible for the cost of their own hotel rooms.
15. What are the designated Poomsaes for the Promotion Test?
Each testing candidate will be responsible for performing two (2) Poomsaes on video and submit in advance of the Promotion Test on Thursday June 15, 2017.
Each candidate will perform their designated poomsae according to the chart below AND one (1) additional poomsae of his or her choice. This selection should be based off of the below chart. Taeguek poomsaes or any other poomsae NOT listed on this chart are NOT ACCEPTABLE. The additional poomsae CANNOT be above the Dan level the candidate is testing for.

Testing candidate can choose from Pyungwon, Taebaek, Keumgang, and Koryo for the one (1) additional poomsae.

16. If I am applying for a Skip Dan Promotion Test how many poomsaes do I need to perform?
Testing candidates for skip dan are ONLY responsible for performing two (2) total poomsaes. These candidates should perform the poomsae for the Dan level testing for and one (1) additional poomsae of his or her choice. This selection should be based off of the below chart. Taeguek poomsaes or any other poomsae NOT listed on this chart are NOT ACCEPTABLE. The additional poomsae CANNOT be above the Dan level the candidate is testing for.
